Following the women’s movements of the 1960s and ’70s, feminist academics at the University of Manitoba established ‘Women’s Studies’, an academic program specifically addressing women’s issues.
Since its establishment, the program has grown from offering one or two courses a year, to its present status as an independent program in the Faculty of Arts with faculty members offering research perspectives and expertise on feminist issues. Students will examine popular culture, violence against women, women in science and technology, human geography, lesbian and queer studies, sex work and sex workers, masculinity studies and Indigenous feminisms, to name a few.
